The commercial logic is sound. AI features reduce activation friction, particularly for users who struggle with profile creation or first messages. Internal data from multiple platforms show that members who use AI writing tools send more messages and stay active longer. Conversion rates improve. Retention ticks up.
But McLeod's warning points to a longer-term risk that isn't captured in quarterly engagement metrics. If AI handles the vulnerable moments—asking someone out, expressing interest, navigating rejection, apologising after a misunderstanding—users never develop the tolerance for emotional discomfort that underpins healthy relationships. They learn to optimise for smooth interactions rather than authentic ones.
Users can tell when friction has been removed, and they value it less.

The sceptical read is that McLeod is positioning Hinge as the 'intentional' dating app—the one for people who want real connection, not algorithmic efficiency. Hinge has long marketed itself as 'designed to be deleted,' a tagline that implies other apps are designed for the opposite. Warning about AI fits that brand narrative perfectly, particularly as Match Group faces continued pressure on user growth.
But the less cynical read is that McLeod has identified a genuine product risk that the industry has been ignoring. Dating apps are incentivised to maximise time on platform and message volume. AI features serve those metrics brilliantly. The problem is that relationship readiness—the ability to handle vulnerability, conflict, and emotional exposure—doesn't correlate with engagement metrics.
The user who struggles through five drafts of a difficult message and finally sends something imperfect is building skills. The user who lets AI handle it is building dependency. Several trust and safety teams at major platforms have raised internal concerns about AI features inadvertently coaching users into manipulative behaviour.
What operators should be watching
The tension McLeod has identified won't resolve itself through product iteration alone. AI features work too well to abandon, and competitors who deploy them will see short-term engagement advantages. But if those features hollow out the user experience in ways that only become apparent months or years later—lower relationship satisfaction, higher churn after matches meet, weaker brand affinity—the platforms that leaned hardest into AI assistance may face a reckoning.
The integration of AI in dating apps has sparked concerns about trust and authenticity. The European Union's Digital Services Act already requires platforms to disclose algorithmic amplification. It's not difficult to imagine regulatory frameworks expanding to require disclosure of AI assistance in interpersonal communication, particularly if evidence mounts that it correlates with poor relationship outcomes.
The operators threading this needle best are treating AI as scaffolding, not replacement. Features that help users express what they already feel—translation tools, tone suggestions, accessibility features—are materially different from features that generate content wholesale. The distinction matters, both for user outcomes and for regulatory scrutiny.
McLeod's warning about AI in dating being 'playing with fire' is unlikely to slow the AI product arms race. But it's clarified the stakes. Dating platforms aren't just competing on features or reach anymore. They're competing on whether their products make users better or worse at the thing the platforms claim to facilitate.
