Match has rolled out AI features across its portfolio, from conversation starters on Tinder to video call prompts on Plenty of Fish. Every one of these tools increases engagement. None of them demonstrably improves match quality or relationship outcomes, because those metrics are harder to measure and harder to monetise.
Hinge's positioning as 'designed to be deleted' creates a particular cognitive dissonance here. The brand has built its identity on being the anti-swipe app, the thoughtful alternative focused on meaningful connections rather than gamified dopamine hits.
Introducing a feature that explicitly coaches users to write profiles optimised for likes—the very currency Hinge claims to de-emphasise—undermines that narrative. The company would argue that better profiles lead to better matches, which lead to faster deletions. But if that were true, Hinge would be publishing time-to-deletion data, not like-increase percentages.
What operators should watch
