A large Indian matrimonial platform just proved something most Western dating apps refuse to acknowledge: showing users fewer profiles can produce better outcomes than the algorithmic fire hose of infinite choice. Researchers from George Mason University, the University of Maryland, and Nanyang Technological University ran a controlled experiment on a platform where gender imbalance had created what they termed "congestion", and the results challenge a decade of assumptions about how online matching should work.
The numbers tell the story. Men outnumbered women anywhere from 60:40 to 90:10. Women received roughly 40 times as many expressions of interest as men. The volume overwhelmed women early in their membership lifecycle, depressing engagement and accelerating churn.
Men, meanwhile, competed for attention from a shrinking pool as women abandoned the platform. The intervention, which the researchers call "gender gating", was simple and asymmetric. Women's profiles became visible only to men who met default criteria for education, income, and age based on prevailing cultural norms.

A man in his forties wouldn't see women more than a decade younger or more than a couple of years older. Women could adjust these parameters. Men couldn't opt out.
The structural problem this study addresses—one gender drowning in low-quality attention whilst the other shouts into a void—will sound familiar to any operator who's looked at engagement metrics by gender. What's striking isn't that filters worked, but that they required taking control away from half the user base to make the marketplace function. Western platforms have spent a decade insisting that more choice and algorithmic optimisation solve congestion.
This research suggests that sometimes you need to just hide the profiles.
What works in Mumbai won't fly in Manhattan
Indian matrimonial platforms operate in a different universe from Tinder or Hinge. Marriage is the explicit goal. Families are often involved in the process. Socioeconomic matching based on education, income, and age isn't just accepted—it's expected.
The filters this platform implemented reinforced traditional hierarchies that align with cultural norms around partner selection. Transpose this to Western markets and the friction becomes obvious. An intervention that prevents men from seeing profiles of younger women or restricts visibility based on income would trigger immediate accusations of reinforcing gender stereotypes and economic gatekeeping.
The researchers acknowledge that the age and income criteria reflected "prevailing social norms", which is academic language for an approach that wouldn't survive first contact with a Western product team's diversity and inclusion review. The asymmetry matters too. Women controlled the filters; men had no ability to opt out of being filtered.
That design works when cultural context supports it. Whether it would work—or even be acceptable—in markets where dating apps position themselves as egalitarian discovery engines is a separate question entirely.
The congestion problem crosses borders
Strip away the cultural specifics, though, and the underlying dynamics mirror complaints across Western platforms. Women on Tinder, Bumble (BMBL), and Hinge routinely report being overwhelmed by matches and messages, many of them low-effort or unwanted. Men report getting little engagement and watching conversations die.
The gender ratios are typically less extreme than the 90:10 splits this Indian platform saw, but the structural problem persists: imbalanced markets create bad experiences for both sides. Match Group (MTCH) and Bumble have tried to address this through product features. Bumble's women-message-first mechanic was designed to reduce unwanted attention.
Hinge's prompt-based profiles aim to encourage higher-effort engagement. Both companies have introduced various filters and preference settings. None of these approaches involve the platform unilaterally restricting who can see whom based on criteria the user doesn't directly control in real time.
That's partly philosophical—Western apps sell themselves on serendipity and discovery—and partly commercial.
Restricting profile visibility means showing users fewer profiles, which could reduce session length and engagement metrics that drive advertiser revenue and premium subscription upsells.
What the study doesn't tell us
The 72% improvement in match efficacy sounds dramatic until you parse the definition. The study measured "open lines of communication with a serious prospect", not relationships, courtships, or marriages. Much of the interaction on matrimonial platforms happens offline after initial contact, which the researchers didn't track.
The platform self-reported the results as successful and rolled out gender gating to its entire user base, suggesting commercial motivations beyond pure research. The claim of "no apparent harm to male users" also deserves scrutiny. Men now had access to fewer profiles.
The study doesn't report whether male satisfaction, engagement, or conversion to paid features changed. It's possible men experienced the change as neutral because their experience was already poor—being invisible to most women isn't measurably worse than being ignored by them. But that's speculation filling gaps the research doesn't address.
The experiment compared users in two Indian states selected for similar size and socioeconomic indicators but different languages and cultures, reducing cross-contamination risk. That's methodologically sound for this market, but it doesn't tell us whether similar interventions would work on platforms with different gender ratios, relationship goals, or cultural contexts around partner selection.
The limits of infinite choice
What this study does establish is that congestion on imbalanced platforms isn't solved by better algorithms surfacing more profiles. Sometimes the fix requires showing people less. Western operators have resisted this conclusion because it conflicts with the product narrative that's dominated the industry for a decade: that machine learning can optimise its way out of structural marketplace problems.
The intervention worked precisely because it was restrictive and non-negotiable for half the user base. Giving men the ability to opt out would have preserved the status quo. Letting women manually filter every profile would have required constant effort and likely resulted in abandoned profiles.
The platform made a choice about how the market should function and enforced it at the infrastructure level. Whether that approach could work in Western markets without the cultural scaffolding that makes age-based and income-based filtering socially acceptable is the question operators should be asking.
The alternative is continuing to optimise around the edges of a marketplace structure that produces poor experiences for both genders, just in different ways. Research has confirmed that swiping through a large number of profiles actually decreases self-esteem compared to viewing fewer profiles, suggesting that the infinite choice model may be fundamentally flawed.
