- Axios reported on 7 May 2026 that Bumble will drop swiping in select markets starting in Q4 2026; Whitney Wolfe Herd was vague on the replacement.
- Bumble unveiled AI assistant Bee in March 2026, according to TechCrunch, as a personal matchmaker then in internal pilot.
- Bumble's Q2 2026 total paying users fell 16.4% to 3.2 million; revenue fell 15.2% to $210.5M.
- Bumble's 13 October $1.3B take-private release by Ithaca Holdings does not mention swiping or Bee.
Bumble (BMBL) will drop swiping in select markets from the fourth quarter of 2026, Axios reported on 7 May, after founder Whitney Wolfe Herd said on "The Axios Show" that the app would be "saying goodbye to the swipe". Axios said she was vague on what comes next. TechCrunch separately reported in March that Bumble was piloting Bee, an AI assistant that learns about members through private chats and pairs them with matches.
The plan resurfaced when Bumble agreed a $1.3B all-cash sale to Ithaca Holdings on 13 October, covered by DII. Bumble's press release does not mention swiping or Bee, and no source DII has seen says how the deal changes the roadmap.
The DII Take
Dropping the swipe is a serious claim for a company whose paying base is shrinking. But so far the evidence is a chief executive's statements, not a product. A mechanic with no disclosed replacement, rollout date or market list is an intention, and members and investors have little to judge it by.
Bee looks like a feature, not a replacement
TechCrunch reported that Bee will first power a "Dates" experience: a private onboarding chat, then a pairing of two people with shared intentions, values and goals, both told why they match. On the Q2 call on 5 August, Wolfe Herd said the shift would be gradual and that Bumble would use more AI under the hood but would not become an "AI-driven experience", per TechCrunch. She described the aim as "fewer, better, more considered signals".
On 11 August Bumble also let anyone in a match send the first message, ending the women-first rule, and extended the reply window from 24 to 72 hours.
The numbers behind the reset
Bumble's Q2 2026 total paying users fell 16.4% to 3.2 million, the company reported. Revenue fell 15.2% to $210.5M. Match Group (MTCH) reported Hinge revenue up 22% in the same quarter, and Axios notes Hinge never had swipes.
Bumble's Q2 2026 total paying users fell 16.4% to 3.2 million.
What to watch
Bumble has not disclosed which markets go first or whether Bee is publicly available. It will not issue a Q3 release or hold a call, and plans to file its 10-Q by 9 November. TechCrunch said going private could give Bumble room to experiment away from public-market pressure. The deal has not closed.
- Bumble's swipe removal rests on Wolfe Herd's statements as reported by Axios and TechCrunch; Bumble's own filings do not describe it.
- Watch for the first named markets, the Bee rollout and any roadmap change once Ithaca's Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman become Co-CEOs.
