Google announced it in July 2017 as Gradient Ventures, a venture fund offering capital and technical mentorship to AI startups, with Anna Patterson as founder and managing partner. In March 2026 the firm announced an oversubscribed $220 million Fund 5 and said it was now a fully independent firm with the same team. Gradient's portfolio page lists companies including Lambda, Oura, Streamlit and Writer. It also lists Ditto, described as the first AI social agent, as a company it partnered with in 2025.
In the dating industry, Gradient took part in the $9.2 million seed round for Ditto, a Berkeley-born service that arranges dates through iMessage for college students. Dating Industry Insights reported in February 2026 that the round was led by Peak XV Partners, with Gradient, Scribble Ventures, Alumni Ventures and Llama Venture also investing.
