About Eureka
Eureka is a Tokyo-based developer of dating and couples apps. According to the tech news site BRIDGE, it launched in 2008 and went on to build Pairs, a Facebook-based dating and marriage-hunting app launched in 2012, and Couples, a memory-sharing and messaging app for couples. In 2014 its CEO was Yu Akasaka and its COO was Jun Nishikawa, and Pairs had reached over 1.3 million downloads in Japan and Taiwan.
On 11 May 2015 Eureka announced that it had been wholly acquired by Match Group, then part of IAC. The price was not disclosed. The two companies said they would keep their brands and independent operations, and that Eureka wanted to develop its Couples business further in Japan and South-East Asia.
Dating Industry Insights describes Pairs, owned by Eureka, as the Japanese market leader, and notes in a September 2026 story on Match Group's Japan business that Match acquired Pairs in 2015 through its purchase of Eureka. In an April 2026 story on Japan's dating subsidy initiative, DII says certified platforms gain a pricing advantage over international operators such as Match Group, and over Pairs, unless those platforms also secure certification.
