A A

## Key Points

- • A Life360 survey of 2,000 American adults reported that 95% of couples use location-sharing technology, with 21% viewing refusal as a relationship deal-breaker.
- • Data from Australia's eSafety Commissioner revealed that only 13% of respondents believe partner tracking is justified in romantic relationships.
- • Domestic abuse charities Women's Aid and Refuge reported rising instances of location-tracking technology being weaponised for coercive control.
- • The UK Online Safety Act covers technology-facilitated abuse, while draft government strategies explicitly highlight location-tracking tools.

A survey from location-tracking firm Life360 claims that 95% of American couples now use location-sharing technology, with the majority calling it essential to relationship health. The figures paint a picture of near-universal adoption and overwhelmingly positive sentiment. They also happen to come from a company whose entire business model depends on normalising always-on location surveillance.

The contradiction is difficult to ignore. What Life360 frames as a relationship wellness tool is rapidly becoming a relationship requirement, with 21% of respondents now viewing refusal to share location as a deal-breaker. That's not optionality. That's coercion dressed up as care.

The DII Take

This is the most instructive relationship tech story of the year, not because the data is reliable—it almost certainly isn't—but because it shows how quickly "feature" becomes "expectation" when commercial incentives align with social anxiety. Dating operators should be watching this trajectory closely. Location-sharing is already table stakes in dating products, but the shift from first-date safety feature to permanent relationship surveillance happens faster than anyone wants to admit.

> The trust and safety implications aren't theoretical anymore.

## When the surveyor sells the product

Life360's methodology deserves scrutiny. The company surveyed 2,000 Americans aged 18-plus who are currently in relationships, asking them about practices that directly benefit Life360's revenue model. According to the results, 62% of couples plan to make location-sharing permanent, 53% believe it's 'the secret to strong relationships', and 73% say it increases trust.

![Couple looking at smartphone together](https://images.pexels.com/photos/7191873/pexels-photo-7191873.jpeg)

Couple looking at smartphone together

Compare that framing to findings from Australia's eSafety Commissioner, which show only 13% of respondents believe partner tracking is justified in a relationship. The gap is instructive. When you ask people about 'sharing' your location, you get one answer. When you ask about 'tracking' your partner, you get another. The practice is identical. The framing determines everything.

Dating platforms have spent years positioning location features as safety infrastructure—and for first dates with strangers, the case is defensible. But the same technology that helps a friend know you made it home safely from a [Hinge](/news/former-hinge-execs-raise-rodeo) date becomes something else entirely when it's running permanently inside an established relationship. One person's transparency is another person's electronic ankle monitor.

## From opt-in to expectation

The speed of normalisation is what should concern operators. Life360's data suggests that 21% of couples now consider refusal to share location a relationship red flag. That figure represents a fundamental shift in expectations. A feature that barely existed in mainstream dating products five years ago is now, for a fifth of users, non-negotiable.

The parallels to earlier relationship technology debates are obvious but imperfect. Shared social media passwords and mutual access to messaging apps raised similar questions about trust versus surveillance. Location data is different. It's real-time. It's physical. And according to domestic abuse charities, it's increasingly cited in cases of coercive control.

![Person checking location on mobile phone](https://images.pexels.com/photos/5427266/pexels-photo-5427266.jpeg)

Person checking location on mobile phone

Women's Aid and Refuge have both reported rising instances of location-tracking technology being weaponised in abusive relationships. The tech itself is neutral, but power dynamics aren't. When one partner has more social, financial, or physical power, "choosing" to share your location permanently isn't always a choice.

> Life360's survey didn't ask who initiated the sharing, whether both partners have equal ability to turn it off, or what happens when one person wants to stop. Those aren't technical questions. They're power questions.

## What dating operators need to consider

For dating platforms, the business case for location features is straightforward. Members want safety tools for first dates. Investors want engagement signals. Location-sharing delivers both. But the shift from first-date feature to permanent relationship infrastructure happens outside the app—and it's happening faster than product teams are preparing for.

[Match Group](/news/match-group-eliminates-chief-operating-officer) (MTCH) and Bumble (BMBL) both offer location-based safety features, framed explicitly around first-date scenarios. Neither has positioned always-on location-sharing as a relationship norm. But if Life360's figures are even directionally accurate, millions of couples who met on dating platforms are now using third-party apps to maintain permanent location visibility. That represents both a product gap and a trust and safety blind spot.

The regulatory angle is just beginning to surface. The UK Online Safety Act includes provisions around technology-facilitated abuse, and the government's draft violence against women and girls strategy explicitly references location-tracking as a tool of coercion. Dating platforms are unlikely to face direct liability for how couples use third-party location apps, but the broader normative shift creates pressure to address the issue in product design and safety education.

The investor lens is murkier. Location features drive engagement, and engagement drives valuation—particularly for [Bumble](/news/bumble-lawsuit-over-preventable-data-breach), which has struggled to differentiate on product since its IPO. Permanent location-sharing would deliver consistent usage data and stronger social graph signals. But positioning a dating platform as relationship surveillance infrastructure is a brand risk few operators will want to take, particularly as regulatory scrutiny of tech-facilitated abuse intensifies.

## The transparency-surveillance line

What's missing from Life360's framing—and from most industry conversation about location features—is acknowledgement that transparency and surveillance can coexist. [Research on the privacy paradox among romantic couples](https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/human-dynamics/articles/10.3389/fhumd.2025.1553619/full) suggests the use of location sharing apps is often kept private, with not everyone willing to reveal this practice to others. A feature can genuinely reduce anxiety for some couples whilst enabling control for others. Both can be true.

![Smartphone displaying map and location services](https://images.pexels.com/photos/5225119/pexels-photo-5225119.jpeg)

Smartphone displaying map and location services

The question for dating operators isn't whether to offer location features. That decision has already been made. The question is how to design them in ways that resist coercive use patterns, and whether platforms have any responsibility to educate members about the difference between first-date safety and permanent tracking.

Life360's survey suggests [location-sharing is becoming a relationship default](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/jul/24/inside-the-rise-of-couple-location-sharing), at least in the company's telling. Whether that's actually true or [marketing dressed as data](https://www.datingnews.com/industry-trends/safety-sells-95-of-couples-use-some-form-of-location-sharing-tech/), the direction of travel is clear. Features become norms. Norms become expectations. And expectations, in relationships with power imbalances, become requirements.

Dating platforms helped normalise meeting strangers online. The industry should be thinking harder about what happens when the tools it builds for first-date safety become the infrastructure for something else entirely.

## Key Takeaways

- • Dating operators like Match Group and Bumble face strategic pressure to adapt location safety features so they do not inadvertently facilitate permanent relationship surveillance.
- • Compliance teams must monitor regulations like the UK Online Safety Act as location-tracking tools built for safety risk becoming liabilities under domestic abuse frameworks.
- • Product teams across dating platforms need to design explicit consent boundaries into location features to prevent third-party utilities like Life360 from filling safety gaps.
