## Key Points

- • Tinder recorded an 8% year-on-year decline in average subscriber count in Q3 2024, experiencing noticeable weakness among users under 25 years old.
- • Hinge achieved 30% revenue growth during Q3 2024 as Gen Z users shifted away from traditional swipe-based dating platforms like Tinder.
- • Pew Research showed 35% of adult dating app users under 30 felt burned out in late 2023, up from 28% in 2020.
- • Tinder launched the Dump Traditional Dating campaign and TikTok series Double Date Island to promote its double dating feature to Gen Z singles.

[Match Group](/news/gen-z-shift-in-person-dating)'s flagship might call it repositioning. Everyone else can call it what it is: panic. Tinder's new 'Dump Traditional Dating' campaign actively disparages the one-on-one first date model in favour of its Double Date feature—a group matching function that lets two friends match with another pair. According to the company, this reflects what Gen Z wants. According to Tinder's recent performance data, it reflects what the platform desperately needs Gen Z to want.

The campaign creative opens in a period-drama setting complete with formal courtship rituals, then yanks viewers into a modern arcade where friends play games together. The message is unambiguous: traditional dating is stuffy, outdated, and frankly a bit embarrassing. That [Tinder](/products/tinder)—the app that popularised swipe-based dating and effectively wrote the script for modern romance apps—is now positioning itself against 'traditional dating' would be ironic if it weren't so transparently strategic.

The DII Take

This is brand repositioning dressed up as cultural insight. Tinder's Gen Z problem is real—new user acquisition has declined across recent quarters as younger singles migrate to [Hinge](/products/hinge) or abandon dating apps entirely. But framing Double Date as a generational preference rather than a retention play doesn't make the underlying issue disappear. The app that defined casual dating for millennials is now chasing a demographic that increasingly views it as their parents' platform.

## When the market leader follows, not leads

Paolo Lorenzoni, Tinder's VP of marketing for EMEA, positioned the shift as listening to user demand. 'For generations, first dates have followed the same script, but Gen Z is looking for something more social, relaxed and fun,' he told trade press. 'Double Date reflects that change, giving people a lower-pressure way to connect by bringing friends into the experience.'

Strip away the messaging and the data tells a different story. Match Group disclosed in Q3 2024 that Tinder's average subscriber count declined 8% year-on-year, with particular weakness among users under 25. Hinge, by contrast, grew revenue 30% in the same period. [Bumble](/news/lucille-mccard-joins-overtone-startup) reported that its Gen Z cohort now represents its fastest-growing segment.

> When your core demographic is actively choosing competitors, launching a feature isn't insight—it's triage.

The claim that 'traditional first dates have followed the same script for generations' also merits scrutiny. Dating culture has evolved considerably over the past two decades alone, largely thanks to the apps themselves. What Tinder describes as 'traditional'—formal, high-pressure, intensely romantic—hasn't been the dominant first-date model since apps normalised casual meetups over coffee or drinks. The campaign attacks a straw man. The real shift isn't away from tradition. It's away from Tinder.

## Distribution strategy as admission

The campaign runs across video-on-demand, radio, and social platforms. More tellingly, it roughly coincides with 'Double Date Island', a Tinder-hosted dating series on [TikTok](/products/tiktok). This represents the company's broader pivot towards meeting Gen Z where they already spend time, rather than attempting to drive in-app engagement through traditional advertising.

That Tinder now relies on TikTok to reach its target demographic is perhaps the most honest part of this entire strategy. The app historically benefited from network effects and cultural ubiquity—it was where singles went because it was where other singles were. For Gen Z, TikTok increasingly serves that function for [social discovery](/glossary/social-discovery). Dating apps are becoming secondary channels in a media ecosystem where the primary relationship-building happens elsewhere.

According to Pew Research data from late 2023, 35% of adults under 30 who use dating apps report feeling burned out by the experience, up from 28% in 2020. Separate research from YPulse found that 43% of Gen Z singles prefer meeting potential partners through mutual friends rather than apps. Double Date, in theory, addresses both concerns—it imports the safety of friend-group socialising into the app environment and reduces the intensity of one-on-one interactions.

Whether that actually solves the underlying problem is another question. The discomfort Gen Z reports around dating apps isn't purely about first-date formats. It's about the commodification of romance, the performative nature of profiles, and the exhausting labour of maintaining multiple conversations that go nowhere. Adding a friend to the experience doesn't fundamentally alter the swipe-match-chat infrastructure that creates those problems. It just dilutes them.

## What Hinge already understood

Jellyfish creative directors Adrian Thomas and Andrew Stone [framed the work as using comedy to highlight how outdated traditional dating conventions appear](https://www.creativeboom.com/news/dump-traditional-dating/) alongside contemporary social habits. Fair enough. But Hinge has been quietly executing this exact positioning for three years without needing to tell users what to dump.

['Designed to be deleted'](https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/hinge-designed-deleted-red-antler/1593721) never attacked dating itself—it attacked the endless-swipe model Tinder pioneered. Hinge built features around conversation prompts, mutual friends, and relationship intent because its target users (also Gen Z, also exhausted) wanted substance over volume. The app didn't reposition against dating. It repositioned against Tinder specifically.

![Person using dating app on smartphone](https://images.pexels.com/photos/7915574/pexels-photo-7915574.jpeg)

Person using dating app on smartphone

And it worked. [Match Group](/news/model-derek-chadwick-goose-gay-app)'s acquisition of Hinge for approximately $400M in 2018 looks smarter each quarter, particularly as Hinge revenue now represents meaningful contribution to the broader portfolio whilst Tinder stagnates.

Bumble, meanwhile, has leaned into friendship and [networking features through Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz,](/news/personality-archetypes-dating-tool-resurgence) acknowledging that younger users want multi-purpose platforms that serve various social needs. Tinder's Double Date feels reactive by comparison—a feature bolted onto existing infrastructure rather than a coherent product vision.

The question operators should ask isn't whether group dating appeals to Gen Z. It likely does, and there's research to support lower-stakes social formats as anxiety reducers. The question is whether a feature alone can reverse platform perception amongst a cohort that increasingly views dating apps as part of the problem, not the solution. Tinder's campaign suggests the company believes messaging can do what product evolution hasn't. That's optimistic at best, delusional at worst.

What happens next depends largely on whether Double Date drives measurable engagement amongst Gen Z users, not just campaign awareness. If the feature genuinely shifts behaviour—increased session time, higher match-to-conversation rates, improved retention—then this represents smart product-led repositioning with marketing support. If it doesn't, Tinder will have spent considerable budget telling its target demographic that everything they associated with the platform is now officially uncool. That's a bold strategy for an app already fighting perception that it peaked five years ago.

## Key Takeaways

- • Dating app operators must recognise that introducing secondary group-matching features fails to resolve fundamental user issues like profile burnout and commodified romance.
- • Investors should monitor whether Match Group can re-engage younger demographics on Tinder or if growth will rely predominantly on subsidiary platforms such as Hinge.
- • Distributing marketing content on external platforms like TikTok signals that dating apps are losing their status as primary social discovery channels for Gen Z.
