A A

## Key Points

- • Researchers from Southampton and Harvard universities analysed swiping behaviour across 20,000 mock profiles to test the impact of political affiliation on dating apps.
- • Conservative supporters faced higher rejection rates than Reform UK backers among 18-to-40-year-old dating app users when political affiliation was explicitly disclosed on profiles.
- • Major dating platforms including Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, and Match Group have introduced political affiliation badges and compatibility prompts in response to user demand since 2016.

Conservative voters are now less desirable to young daters than Reform UK supporters, according to [research from Southampton and Harvard universities that analysed swiping behaviour across 20,000 mock dating profiles](https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/political-science-research-and-methods/article/sleeping-with-the-enemy-partisanship-and-tolerance-in-online-dating/628B2BD08EA384301E87E577305F4865). Among 18-to-40-year-olds, profiles displaying Conservative affiliation were rejected more often than those supporting Reform UK. This finding tells us less about the far-right's appeal than it does about the spectacular reputational collapse of the Tory brand amongst the demographic that dating apps serve.

The study, conducted by researchers who deployed fabricated profiles across major platforms, measured match likelihood when political affiliation was disclosed. [Conservative supporters faced higher rejection rates than Reform backers in the 18-40 cohort](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/may/19/swipe-right-dating-app-users-prefer-reform-voters-to-tories-research-suggests). That's not because Nigel Farage has suddenly become a romantic icon.

The DII Take

This is a brand damage story, not a political realignment story. The Conservative Party has managed to achieve something remarkable: they've become more stigmatised amongst young daters than a party led by Nigel Farage. That should alarm Tory strategists far more than it should comfort Reform.

> For dating operators, it's further evidence that political filtering has moved from fringe behaviour to mainstream sorting mechanism—and that partisan affiliation now carries reputational weight comparable to lifestyle choices like smoking or veganism.

Platforms ignoring this shift are missing a product signal.

## When methodology matters

The Southampton-Harvard study deserves scrutiny before operators draw product conclusions. Twenty thousand mock profiles sounds impressive until you ask what 'mock' means. Were these profiles realistic enough to pass platform verification? Did they include photos, bios, and chat behaviour that mirrored real users, or were they stripped-down political billboards that would never survive actual use?

More importantly, swiping behaviour on profiles you know to be fabricated—or profiles that feel inauthentic—doesn't necessarily predict real-world dating choices. Users swipe differently when consequences are abstract. The researchers themselves appear to have framed this as Conservative brand toxicity rather than Reform normalisation, which suggests they understand the limitations.

A left-swipe on a profile labelled 'Conservative' could signal genuine romantic incompatibility, tribal signalling, or simple fatigue with a party that dominated headlines for over a decade. The study also doesn't tell us whether the difference between Conservative and Reform rejection rates is statistically significant or marginal. If Reform supporters are 2% more likely to get matches than Tories, that's a data point. If it's 20%, that's a collapse.

## Reform as protest, Conservatives as establishment

What the data likely captures is less about ideology and more about association. Reform UK, rebranded from the Brexit Party in 2021, remains relatively new as a electoral force. Supporting Reform can still be read as protest—an outsider stance, a rejection of the establishment, even a bit of edgy contrarianism.

![Dating app profile on mobile device screen](https://images.pexels.com/photos/19783682/pexels-photo-19783682.jpeg)

Conservative affiliation, by contrast, signals 14 years of governance. Austerity cuts to public services. The Partygate scandals. Liz Truss's 49-day premiership and the mortgage crisis that followed.

> For younger daters—many of whom entered adulthood during this period—the Conservative brand isn't just politically objectionable. It's socially embarrassing.

That embarrassment threshold is what dating apps measure particularly well. Romantic choice is inherently about social signalling. Who you're willing to be seen with, introduce to friends, defend at dinner parties. A Reform supporter might be written off as misguided or going through a phase. A Conservative supporter, particularly post-2019, suggests someone who either wasn't paying attention or was fine with what they saw.

## Political filtering as product feature

Political disclosure and filtering on dating apps has intensified markedly since 2016. Bumble (BMBL) added political affiliation badges in 2020. Hinge made political views a profile prompt. OkCupid built an entire question architecture around political compatibility, and [Match Group](/news/match-group-eliminates-chief-operating-officer) (MTCH) properties have experimented with various implementations.

This wasn't driven by operator ideology—it was driven by user demand for faster sorting mechanisms. The trend mirrors behaviour in the US, where MAGA affiliation became a dating dealbreaker for significant portions of the user base. Whether the UK is following the same trajectory or developing its own flavour of political polarisation is an open question.

![Person swiping on dating application](https://images.pexels.com/photos/6833567/pexels-photo-6833567.jpeg)

Person swiping on dating application

What's certain is that partisan identity now functions as a heuristic for values, lifestyle, and social circle—and users treat it accordingly. For platforms, the question is whether to surface political affiliation more prominently or bury it deeper. [OkCupid](/news/study-highlights-gender-differences-dating)'s approach—foregrounding compatibility on contentious issues—works for a compatibility-focused product but may alienate users seeking escapism.

## What this doesn't tell us

The study doesn't reveal whether political filtering improves relationship outcomes or simply accelerates homophily. It doesn't tell us whether younger daters are rejecting Conservative supporters because of policy positions, tribal identity, or aesthetic cringe. And it certainly doesn't tell us whether swiping behaviour on mock profiles—potentially flagged as inauthentic by experienced users—translates to real-world choices when stakes are higher.

What it does confirm is that the Conservative Party's reputational damage extends beyond electoral politics into the social sphere where dating apps operate. That's useful intelligence for platforms trying to understand how users sort themselves, but it's not a mandate for product changes. Political affiliation remains one signal amongst many, and overindexing on it risks turning [dating apps into echo chambers](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/17499755211051559) that users didn't ask for.

The Conservative Party's problem isn't that dating apps have turned against them. It's that their brand has become so socially corrosive that even a party led by Nigel Farage looks preferable to a meaningful slice of young daters. That's a political crisis, not a product one. Operators should note the trend, but the real audience for this research is Conservative Central Office—assuming anyone there is still paying attention to what young people think.

## Key Takeaways

- • Political affiliation has transformed from a fringe preference into a mainstream sorting mechanism on dating platforms, carrying weight similar to fundamental lifestyle choices.
- • Dating app operators must carefully evaluate whether to foreground political filtering tools, balancing user demand for rapid social sorting against the risk of creating echo chambers.
