## Key Points

- • A study published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics analysed 1.1 million American university student survey responses between 2008 and 2019.
- • Greek-affiliated university students reported a rise in sexual partners after Tinder launched in 2013, but committed relationship rates remained unchanged.
- • Sexual assault reports among surveyed American undergraduates increased by two percentage points against a baseline of nine per cent following Tinder's launch.
- • Match Group and Bumble are pivoting towards intentionality features because historical data shows original swipe mechanics failed to foster committed relationships.

[Match Group](/news/gen-z-shift-in-person-dating) has spent the past two years pivoting Hinge around "designed to be deleted" and rejigging its portfolio toward intentionality. Bumble reshuffled its leadership in 2024 and bet heavily on "serious connections". The industry consensus is clear: swipe culture is out, meaningful relationships are in.

Three economists have now published the first rigorous quantitative analysis of what happened when [Tinder](/products/tinder) launched on American university campuses between 2013 and 2019. Their study, published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, provides uncomfortable clarity: the swipe model delivered casual sex at scale whilst leaving committed relationships untouched.

## The Greek System as Ground Zero

Tinder's campus strategy was deliberate and effective. The company deployed brand ambassadors, subsidised fraternity and sorority parties, and seeded the app through Greek life networks where density mattered most. A matching platform is worthless without liquidity, and Greek organisations provided concentrated pools of status-conscious students already operating within informal social hierarchies.

The researchers treated this targeted rollout as a natural experiment, comparing Greek-affiliated students with non-affiliated peers before and after summer 2013. They drew on National College Health Assessment data covering 1.1 million full-time undergraduates surveyed between 2008 and 2019, supplemented by more than 700,000 college newspaper articles, national search trends, and anonymised mobile location data tied to university postal codes.

After 2013, Greek-affiliated students reported a measurable rise in the average number of sexual partners and were several percentage points more likely to have had sex in the past month. The proportion in committed relationships did not budge. Neither did reports of relationship difficulties.

> The app lowered search costs and reduced friction in sexual matching markets without creating the conditions for pair bonding.

The DII Take

This is the economic autopsy that explains the industry's current identity crisis. Tinder's campus launch proved that swipe mechanics could industrialise casual hookups whilst doing precisely nothing for people [seeking](/news/seeking-implements-new-anti-scam-measures) long-term partners. The data shows apps didn't replace committed relationships—they simply didn't facilitate them.

A decade later, every major operator is scrambling to retrofit intentionality onto architectures designed for volume, because user frustration with the original model has become an existential business problem.

## Superstar Dynamics and Physical Risk

The study identifies a "superstar effect" familiar to anyone tracking platform economics: a disproportionate share of matches concentrated among a smaller group of users, particularly men. This mirrors the winner-take-most dynamics seen across digital marketplaces, from [YouTube](/products/youtube) to Uber. For dating apps, it explains why average user satisfaction remains stubbornly low even as monthly active user counts climb.

Physical risks rose alongside activity. The researchers found that reports of sexual assault increased by two percentage points against a baseline of roughly nine per cent. [HIV testing rose by more than one percentage point, alongside higher rates of bacterial infections including chlamydia](https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/reproductive-health/articles/10.3389/frph.2024.1453423/full). The authors note carefully that increased testing "may partly reflect greater awareness of exposure rather than solely higher infection rates".

Mental health outcomes did not deteriorate on average, and among Greek-affiliated students—especially women—the data showed slight improvements on several indicators, including lower rates of severe depression, intentional self-harm and eating disorders. The researchers suggest that increased romantic attention may have provided a temporary confidence boost for some during the college years, though they make no claims about long-term wellbeing beyond graduation.

## The Intentionality Scramble Makes Sense

The timeline matters. This data captures 2013 to 2019, the formative years when swipe-based apps became infrastructure. Today's intentionality pivot is not a response to abstract cultural shifts. It is a direct market correction to problems embedded in the original product design.

Hinge's "designed to be deleted" positioning, launched in 2019 and amplified after Match acquired the app, directly addresses the commitment gap visible in this data. [Bumble](/news/lucille-mccard-joins-overtone-startup)'s recent leadership changes and renewed focus on serious connections reflect the same calculation: the superstar effect and low conversion to relationships create churn that undermines lifetime value.

> The challenge for operators is architectural. Swipe mechanics optimise for initial engagement and rapid matching, not for compatibility or relationship formation.

Retrofitting intentionality requires changing incentive structures, match algorithms and user behaviour simultaneously. That is expensive, slow and risky when you are a public company reporting quarterly revenue growth to investors tracking MTCH and BMBL share performance.

Couple meeting in person after connecting through dating application

What the study does not answer is whether the current wave of product changes will work. The data confirms that the original swipe model failed to facilitate committed relationships, but it provides no evidence that prompts, video profiles or compatibility quizzes will succeed where swipes did not. The industry is running a live experiment in behaviour change, and the only dataset we have is a decade old, capturing a different product generation and a different user cohort.

Trust and safety teams should note the sexual assault findings, even with appropriate caution about causation. The two-percentage-point increase in reports may reflect greater awareness or reduced stigma rather than higher incidence, but it still represents a compliance and duty-of-care surface that regulators under the UK Online Safety Act (OSA) and EU Digital Services Act (DSA) will not ignore.

The next dataset to watch is whether [apps rebuilt around intentionality show different outcomes in committed relationship formation](https://www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/more-connected-than-ever-before-online-dating-and-the-youth-mental-health-crisis) five years from now. If they do not, the industry will need a harder conversation about whether algorithmic matching can ever replace offline courtship dynamics—or whether [dating apps are structurally suited only to the sexual marketplace Tinder so effectively industrialised](https://www.psypost.org/how-the-mobile-matchmaking-revolution-rewired-college-romance/).

## Key Takeaways

- • Dating app operators face structural challenges retrofitting intentionality onto architectures designed for volume, as changing algorithms and user behaviour simultaneously threatens quarterly revenue growth.
- • Compliance teams must address duty-of-care obligations under the UK Online Safety Act and EU Digital Services Act as research links reduced search friction to physical safety risks.
