## Key Points

- • A Kinsey Institute survey of 2,500 US adults found that 43 per cent of Gen Z LGBTQ+ singles changed dating behaviour due to political factors in February 2025.
- • Some 52 per cent of Gen Z LGBTQ+ singles reported feeling less confident that dating platforms would protect them from harassment or discrimination than a year prior.
- • Queer dating platform Lex experienced a 27 per cent increase in posts explicitly mentioning political values or dealbreakers between December 2024 and January 2025.
- • Match Group reported higher engagement with Hinge political filters, while #Open added political stance options following a fourfold increase in member requests.

One in four LGBTQ+ singles in the United States are changing how they date in response to the current political climate, according to new research from the Kinsey Institute—with Gen Z queer singles nearly twice as likely as older cohorts to let politics reshape their romantic behaviour. The findings reveal a sharp generational divide that poses significant challenges for dating platforms trying to serve an increasingly fragmented market. What's reshaping isn't just political preference screening—it's the entire apparatus of how young queer people approach connection.

The findings, drawn from a [nationally representative survey of 2,500 US adults conducted in February 2025](https://news.iu.edu/kinseyinstitute/live/news/46055-1-in-4-lgbtq-singles-in-kinsey-institute-study-say-the), show 26% of LGBTQ+ respondents have altered their dating patterns due to political factors. Among 18-25 year-olds, that figure climbs to 43%. Compare that to just 24% of LGBTQ+ millennials and 18% of older queer singles reporting similar shifts, and a clear generational fault line emerges.

According to the Kinsey data, Gen Z LGBTQ+ respondents report avoiding certain dating apps perceived as less politically aligned with their values, declining to date in specific geographical areas, and pulling back from dating entirely during periods of heightened political tension. Some 31% of young queer singles say they've used political affiliation as a primary filter on dating platforms, compared to 19% of their millennial counterparts.

The DII Take

> If nearly half of Gen Z LGBTQ+ singles are letting political concerns dictate where and how they date, platforms face a choice: lean into political signalling as a core product feature, or risk losing the cohort that drives cultural adoption.

This isn't just culture war noise—it's a market segmentation issue with real implications for dating operators. The generational split also suggests this behaviour pattern may intensify rather than fade, as these politically-conscious daters age into higher spending brackets.

## Why Gen Z queer singles are different

The generational divergence tracks with broader patterns in how young LGBTQ+ people experience political threats compared to older cohorts. Gen Z queer singles came of age during marriage equality and increased social acceptance, making recent policy rollbacks feel particularly destabilising. According to supplementary data from the Kinsey study, 68% of LGBTQ+ Gen Z respondents say current political developments have made them feel less safe in daily life—17 percentage points higher than millennials.

![Person using dating app on smartphone](https://images.pexels.com/photos/4657972/pexels-photo-4657972.jpeg)

Person using dating app on smartphone

That heightened threat perception translates directly into intimate relationship formation. Justin Garcia, executive director of the Kinsey Institute's research programme, noted in the study release that younger LGBTQ+ individuals show significantly higher rates of what researchers term "anticipatory dating restriction"—modifying behaviour based on potential rather than experienced discrimination. The gap between perception and direct experience matters here. Whilst 43% of Gen Z queer singles report changing dating behaviour, only 29% say they've personally faced discrimination on dating platforms in the past year.

Geography amplifies the effect. LGBTQ+ singles in states that have passed restrictive legislation around gender-affirming care or LGBTQ+ rights show dating behaviour changes at rates 12 percentage points higher than those in states without recent policy shifts, according to the Kinsey data. Gen Z queer singles are more likely to treat state policy as a proxy for local dating safety, even in urban areas generally considered progressive.

The comparison to heterosexual daters reveals how concentrated the political dating effect is within LGBTQ+ communities. Just 11% of straight singles reported changing dating behaviour due to political climate—still notable, but nowhere near the rates seen among queer respondents. Political polarisation affects everyone's dating life, but it's reshaping LGBTQ+ romantic markets with particular force.

## What platforms are seeing

Dating operators have picked up signals consistent with the Kinsey findings, though few will speak on the record about politically-motivated user behaviour shifts. [Match Group](/news/match-group-eliminates-chief-operating-officer) (MTCH) disclosed in its Q4 2024 earnings that Hinge saw increased engagement with political preference filters in late 2024 and early 2025, though the company didn't break out data by sexual orientation or age cohort. Grindr (GRND) has maintained its policy of not offering political filters, arguing they would fragment the user base—a stance that may be costing the platform some Gen Z users based on these survey findings.

[Lex](/news/harmonizer-adaptability-better-than-similarity-dating), the text-based queer dating app, reported in January that it saw a 27% spike in posts explicitly mentioning political values or dealbreakers in December 2024 and January 2025. That tracks with the broader pattern of political concerns moving from background preference to foreground requirement for many young LGBTQ+ daters.

The product question for mainstream platforms becomes whether to treat political alignment as a relationship compatibility factor on par with religion or parenting goals—or whether surfacing it too prominently accelerates the balkanisation operators have spent years trying to avoid. #Open, which targets non-monogamous users including many LGBTQ+ members, added political stance as a profile field in February after member requests increased fourfold since November.

## The trust dimension

> Trust and safety operations that felt adequate for older user cohorts aren't calibrated for Gen Z threat perception.

Underneath the generational behaviour shift sits a trust issue that dating operators can't easily product-manage away. The Kinsey data shows 52% of Gen Z LGBTQ+ singles say they're less confident that dating platforms will protect them from harassment or discrimination than they were a year ago. That's a 22-point gap compared to older queer users.

![LGBTQ pride flag and community gathering](https://images.pexels.com/photos/4611912/pexels-photo-4611912.jpeg)

LGBTQ pride flag and community gathering

Part of that stems from visible content moderation failures—reported instances of anti-LGBTQ+ harassment on major platforms increased 31% year-on-year according to GLAAD's most recent Social Media Safety Index. Younger users appear to interpret those moderation gaps as canaries in the coal mine, signalling broader safety risks that older cohorts either don't perceive or have learned to navigate.

The business implication is straightforward but expensive: trust and safety operations that felt adequate for older user cohorts aren't calibrated for Gen Z threat perception. Platforms chasing growth among young LGBTQ+ users face investment requirements beyond standard content moderation—geographic safety features, political alignment tools, and community governance models that signal protection rather than just promising it.

Whether this behaviour pattern proves durable depends partly on whether the political climate stabilises and partly on how Gen Z LGBTQ+ singles adapt to sustained uncertainty. The Kinsey Institute plans to field the survey again in Q3 2025. If the numbers hold or climb, dating operators will need to treat political climate response as a permanent feature of LGBTQ+ market dynamics rather than a temporary reaction to a difficult moment. [Recent data also shows one in five Gen Z queer people have relocated to LGBTQ safer states and cities](https://queeradventurers.com/politics-is-reshaping-queer-dating-and-travel/), suggesting these dating behaviour changes are part of broader relocation and lifestyle decisions driven by political concerns. Additionally, research indicates that [more than half of LGBTQIA+ people came out on dating apps before telling friends or family](https://uk.tinderpressroom.com/news?item=122614), highlighting the central role these platforms play in queer identity formation and community connection.

## Key Takeaways

- • Dating app operators targeting younger queer demographics must treat political alignment features and trust mechanisms as critical retention tools rather than optional profile filters.
- • Trust and safety compliance teams need to upgrade moderation infrastructure and regional safety tools to satisfy Gen Z LGBTQ+ users' heightened perception of risk.
- • Investors should anticipate required software development expenditure as platforms implement granular safety and political compatibility features to mitigate Gen Z user churn.
