Hyderabad police have intensified surveillance on Jubilee Hills pubs after more than 70 complaints from men who say women they met on dating apps ran up huge bills and vanished, Deccan Chronicle reported on 25 October. The paper said over ₹35 lakh was reportedly lost in five months. The Siasat Daily, citing a police official speaking to Deccan Chronicle, relayed the same figures.

The apps involved in the 70 complaints are not named, and DII has found no response from any dating company. The complaints are allegations, and police have not confirmed that any woman or pub was involved in fraud.

### The DII Take

Whatever police conclude about pubs, the reputational cost lands on the dating category. A member left with a large bill after a first date does not distinguish between a scammer, a venue and the app that made the introduction. The 2024 case, in which police said a gang used women's photos on Tinder, Bumble and Hinge accounts, suggests this is a recurring pattern in Hyderabad, not a one-off, and trust and safety teams in India should treat it that way.

### What police say they are doing

A senior police officer said police had received more than 70 complaints since January, 33 of them from the city and the rest from other commissionerates. Special teams from cybercrime and She Teams are investigating, along with the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB). A cybercrime officer said: 'Our teams are gathering evidence to establish whether incidents involved deliberate deception, unlawful demands for payment or other offences'.

Police are also examining whether individuals, pub managements or others were involved. 'Action will be taken against pub managements found violating the rules', a senior officer told the paper. The wider sweep covers closing hours, underage drinking and noise, with more than 33 pubs operating in Jubilee Hills.

### A pattern with history

NewsMeter reported on 29 September that a software engineer complained of a ₹29,884 bill after a match from the Quack Quack app left; he alleges she showed a fake payment. In June 2024, Siasat reported, Madhapur police arrested seven men over a similar scheme at a pub, with DCP Dr G Vineet saying the gang used women's photos on Tinder, [Bumble](https://www.datingindustryinsights.com/companies/bumble) (BMBL) and Hinge accounts. - Hyderabad police say they have received more than 70 dating-app complaints since January, but no arrests or pub closures have been reported, so the enforcement outcome is unknown.
- Operators in India face reputational exposure from in-person date scams even when the venue, not the app, is the focus of police action.
- Watch for whether police name the apps involved, and whether pub managements or individuals are found responsible.
