## Key Points

- • Double-date application Double raised $1.6M in seed funding in 2023, while Tinder reported a 65% spike in double date mentions since January.
- • Survey data from Slide1828 indicates that 48% of its users feel uncomfortable meeting a dating app match alone without a friend present.
- • Pew Research found 57% of women aged 18 to 34 on dating apps received unwanted sexually explicit messages, driving safety concerns.
- • Match Group reported 23 million Hinge users in Q4 2023, whereas double-date platforms currently maintain user bases in the tens of thousands.

Match Group and [Bumble](/news/bumble-lawsuit-over-preventable-data-breach) spent the last decade perfecting the swipe. A new cohort of apps is betting Gen Z would rather bring a friend than do it alone. Double-date platforms—which match pairs of friends rather than individuals—are attracting investment and user growth, but what's less clear is whether this represents a sustainable business model or a damning indictment of the user experience the industry has spent $20B building.

The pitch from founders is framed as innovation. The reality reads more like a workaround for problems the dating industry created and never solved. This isn't Gen Z reinventing dating because they prefer group hangs—it's Gen Z mitigating risk because incumbent platforms failed to make one-on-one meetings feel safe or authentic enough.

> The fact that "bring a friend" is now a product category rather than common-sense advice tells you everything about where trust levels sit.

## Safety as product, not feature

Slide1828, which launched in the UK before expanding to the US, disclosed survey data from its user base showing 48% of respondents felt uncomfortable meeting someone alone from a dating app. A further 53% reported feeling more confident about dates when a friend was present. The company hasn't disclosed sample size or methodology, and the figures come from existing users—a cohort self-selected for believing double dates solve a problem—but the directional read aligns with broader industry data on trust.

According to Pew Research, 57% of women aged 18–34 who've used dating apps report receiving unwanted sexually explicit messages. Bumble's own research, published in its 2023 community guidelines report, found that 44% of users under 30 expressed concern about meeting matches in person due to safety fears. Match Group has spent years bolstering identity verification, photo verification, and in-app video—tools designed to reduce [catfishing](/glossary/catfishing) and harassment.

The fact that a material cohort of young users would rather rebuild the entire interaction model than trust those features is the signal here. Double-date apps reposition safety from a feature layer to the structural premise. You're not trusting the platform's verification—you're trusting your friend's judgment in real time.

## The network effects problem

For all their appeal as product narrative, double-date platforms face a structural scaling challenge that makes traditional dating economics look simple. A standard dating app needs two active users to make a match. Double-date platforms need four—and those four need to coordinate schedules, preferences, and location.

Slide1828 requires users to create joint profiles with a friend. Double, which raised a $1.6M seed round in 2023 according to Crunchbase, uses a similar pairing model. Both apps are iOS-only and report user bases in the tens of thousands rather than millions. For context, [Hinge](/news/former-hinge-execs-raise-rodeo) reported 23M users in Q4 2023, whilst Bumble disclosed 23M paying users across all apps in the same period.

> A double-date app must convince four people to engage for a single interaction, but the relationship being formed is still between two individuals. The friends are facilitators, not customers.

The unit economics are unfavourable. That limits willingness to pay and reduces repeat engagement once a match progresses beyond the initial introduction phase. Retention models also diverge—traditional apps lose users to success and failure, but double-date apps lose users to success twice as fast. The moment one person in a pair finds a partner, the other half of the profile is stranded.

## What incumbents are watching

Match Group and Bumble have both tested group features in the past. [Tinder](/news/tinder-names-vccp-uk-social-agency) launched Tinder Social in 2017, allowing groups to match for nights out, then quietly killed it a year later. Bumble tested BFF and Bizz as separate modes within the app. Neither drove material revenue compared to dating.

The difference this time is framing. Previous group features positioned themselves as adjacent to dating—ways to find friends or expand social circles. Double-date apps position themselves as the primary dating experience, with safety and authenticity as the unlock. That's a direct critique of the core product, not a complementary use case.

![Young people using smartphones for social connection](https://images.pexels.com/photos/30732853/pexels-photo-30732853.jpeg)

Young people using smartphones for social connection

Executives at the incumbents are unlikely to see existential risk here yet—the user bases are too small, the economics too unproven. But if double-date apps gain traction with under-25s and start appearing in app store rankings, expect rapid cloning. Match Group has the distribution and capital to launch a group-dating feature across its portfolio in a quarter.

The harder question for incumbents is whether acknowledging the category legitimises the safety critique. Launching a "bring a friend" feature is implicitly admitting that meeting alone felt risky. That's a messaging problem for brands that have spent years—and material legal budgets—arguing their platforms are sufficiently safe as designed.

The more immediate competitive threat isn't to Match or Bumble. It's to Hinge, which has built its brand on "designed to be deleted" and thoughtful connections. If Gen Z decides thoughtful isn't enough without a witness, Hinge loses its primary differentiator against the swipe incumbents. The brand that promised to solve dating app fatigue through better matches may find itself outflanked by a model that solves it through better risk management.

Operators should watch retention curves for under-25 cohorts over the next two quarters and monitor app store search trends for "double date" and "group dating" queries. If this is a fad, it'll show up as dormant installs within six months. If it's a preference shift, it'll show up as declining same-store engagement among young users on traditional platforms—the signal that matters for MTCH and BMBL share prices.

The double-date apps themselves may never scale. The behaviour they're surfacing already has. [More accountability and the chance to observe behavior in front of others](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/relationships/article-gen-z-dating-apps-tinder-double-date-social-anxiety/) are driving factors that extend beyond simple safety concerns—they speak to a fundamental shift in how younger users evaluate compatibility. Meanwhile, [dating app burnout has become a widespread phenomenon](https://www.forbes.com/health/dating/dating-app-fatigue/), with the vast majority of users reporting fatigue. As [Tinder's own data shows mentions of "double dates" spiking 65% since January](https://mediabrief.com/tinders-double-date-feature-taps-gen-zs-social-dating-style-sparks-surge-in-group-matchups/), the incumbents themselves are beginning to acknowledge this shift in user behavior.

## Key Takeaways

- • High coordination requirements and rapid user churn when one partner pairs off present severe unit economic challenges for group dating application operators.
- • Traditional operators like Match Group and Bumble face messaging risks, as launching group options implicitly legitimises safety concerns regarding individual meetings.
- • Hinge faces competitive pressure if Generation Z users begin prioritising real-time safety through group dates over algorithm-driven intentional matching features.
