# ParshipMeet's Pivot: Abandoning Gen Z for Profitable Over-40s

A A

## Key Points

- • ParshipMeet Group recorded a 5% revenue increase at Parship and a 25% revenue increase at eharmony following a pivot to over-40s daters.
- • Conversion rates jumped by 23% at Parship and 41% at eharmony after replacing swipe interfaces with one-profile-at-a-time matching.
- • Chief Executive Officer Matthew Gain revealed at the GDI Conference that ParshipMeet Group also reversed subscription price increases to drive growth.
- • Online Personals Group operates five mature-focused dating brands profitably on a single underlying technology platform, including recently acquired eDarling.

ParshipMeet Group spent years haemorrhaging revenue whilst chasing Gen Z daters who never really wanted what it was selling. Then the company did something radical: it stopped. The pivot to over-40s has driven substantial revenue and conversion growth, according to figures CEO [Matthew Gain](/people/matthew-gain) disclosed at last week's GDI Conference.

That isn't marketing repositioning. It's an admission that the industry's Gen Z gold rush was a strategic mistake expensive enough to require emergency price cuts.

The DII Take

This is the most honest thing anyone has said about dating product strategy in years. Whilst [Match Group](/companies/match-group) and Bumble have spent the better part of four years reverse-engineering TikTok and haemorrhaging engineering talent on features nobody asked for, ParshipMeet quietly discovered that the users already paying for its products actually wanted more of what made those products different, not less. The industry has been solving the wrong problem — and leaving a profitable, underserved segment to fend for itself.

> If these numbers hold, every operator should be asking whether their own Gen Z theatre is covering up a far simpler growth opportunity.

## What actually changed

The product shift goes well beyond slapping 'mature dating' on the homepage. ParshipMeet has fundamentally restructured how eharmony and [Parship](/products/parship-app) present matches, moving away from the endless scroll of swipe-based interfaces that have become table stakes across the market. Members now see one profile at a time.

Parship has formalised partnerships with psychologists. AI matching has been retooled — not as a [ChatGPT](/products/chatgpt) bolt-on, but as infrastructure for improving compatibility signals and trust and safety workflows.

Gain described the strategy as building 'a safe place for people willing to be brave enough to start dating again in midlife'. That phrasing matters. It positions the product as addressing a specific emotional friction point — the vulnerability of re-entering dating after divorce, bereavement, or simply years out of the market — rather than competing on volume, speed, or gamification.

For now, though, pricing has moved in the opposite direction. ParshipMeet previously raised subscription fees in an attempt to offset falling revenue, a textbook response to declining user numbers. Those increases have since been reversed. The company has also reallocated significant portions of its advertising budget away from traditional performance channels and into influencer marketing.

Gain reported that likes, retention, and renewal rates have all improved alongside the headline sales and conversion figures. The company expects further benefits in the second half of 2026, though that timeline speaks to a multi-quarter product development cycle rather than a quick marketing fix.

## The quiet profitability of Online Personals Group

ParshipMeet isn't the only operator betting on older daters. Carsten Böltz, CEO of Online Personals Group, offered a reminder at the same conference that his portfolio — which includes C-Date, be2, Academic Singles, Singles50, and the recently acquired [eDarling](/products/edarling) — is not just surviving but profitable. All brands run on a single platform, allowing feature rollouts across the portfolio without rebuilding infrastructure for each property.

Online Personals Group doesn't chase headlines. It doesn't chase Gen Z either. Böltz has spent 21 years in the industry, and his strategic thesis appears to be that there is sustainable margin in serving older demographics with differentiated products that don't try to compete with Tinder on volume or virality.

> The eDarling acquisition from [Spark Networks](/companies/spark-networks) this year — executed quietly, with no press fanfare — suggests the company sees consolidation opportunities among mature-focused brands that the larger operators have written off.

Böltz also revisited M&A predictions he made at the IDEA Summit in 2022. He expected limited private equity involvement, selective acquisitions by strategic buyers, and no meaningful wave of dating companies merging with one another. Two years later, that thesis has largely held. The predicted consolidation wave never materialised, and the IPO window remains firmly closed.

## What this means for the rest of the market

The broader question is whether ParshipMeet's experience is idiosyncratic or indicative. If a company can reverse revenue decline by abandoning Gen Z and doubling down on 40+ daters, why isn't every subscale operator doing the same?

Part of the answer is that most dating companies don't have brand equity with older users to begin with. ParshipMeet had the advantage of starting with products that historically skewed mature and serious-minded. Repositioning required refining what already worked, not inventing a new audience from scratch. Operators that built their brands around swiping, casual dating, or Gen Z aesthetics would face a far steeper repositioning challenge.

The other part of the answer is that the industry has spent years optimising for metrics that favour younger users: daily active users, swipes per session, time in app. Those metrics matter to growth investors and to advertising models. They matter far less if your business is subscription-driven and your members want fewer, higher-quality matches rather than infinite optionality.

For Match Group, which has spent recent quarters trying to make Tinder and Hinge appealing to Gen Z whilst also defending margin, ParshipMeet's results raise an uncomfortable question: how much revenue has the company left on the table by neglecting the [OurTime](/products/ourtime) and Stir demographics in favour of features that improve engagement but not monetisation? Bumble, meanwhile, has repositioned itself as a 'women-first' platform for 'intentional' dating, but its core product experience remains swipe-based and volume-oriented.

The lesson isn't that Gen Z is worthless as a segment. It's that chasing a demographic that doesn't value what you offer — and rebuilding your product to accommodate them — can destroy more value than it creates. ParshipMeet's numbers suggest that the most profitable move may be to stop chasing altogether and serve the users who were already showing up. That's not retreat. It's basic strategy.

## Key Takeaways

- • Dating app operators prioritising Gen Z engagement metrics risk damaging conversion and retention among older demographics willing to pay for premium subscriptions.
- • Subscale legacy platforms can achieve higher profit margins by refining features for mature users rather than redesigning interfaces to match swipe-based apps.
- • Match Group and Bumble may face investor pressure to reallocate capital toward mature demographics if Gen Z features fail to generate sufficient revenue.
